In South Africa, the poor and the rich live closely together. You can clearly see this contrast between public, overcrowded hospitals with long wait times and private hospitals with a more personal and convenient treatment and with more qualified staff. After decades of racial health politics, today everybody has a right to receive medical treatment. But in reality the hospitals are often not sufficiently equipped and understaffed. If one were to try to satisfy the needs of all inhabitants, an already burdened health care system would have to face a big challenge. Foreigners can be treated in those public hospitals but they have to pay out of pocket and should expect long wait times. All this while the health care services are rarely equivalent to German standards. Only 18% of the population have a private health insurance, but the number of private hospitals increases rapidly. The treatment there is definitely the better choice; therefore it really pays off to be insured privately.
