Living in Poland – Health Insurance for Foreigners

Poland – culture and tradition

The health care system in Poland is quite basic and poor, and there is only one version for all, the public health insurance. Maybe you have already experience with that. Doctors close their practice earlier because it is not profitable to treat more public insured patients. The Polish health insurance covers only the basic health care, that means most treatments have to be paid by the patient.
Health Insurance in Poland

Benchmark data for the Polish health system:

Health insurance system: Since 2003 the health insurance system consists of one single health insurance, the National Health Fund (NHF). All inhabitants belong to the NHF.

Type of health insurance: The Polish health insurance is a citizens’ insurance with an obligatory membership of the entire population.

Private health insurance: Unfortunately, there are no Polish private health insurances available.

Funding for health insurance: Funding is provided through 8% of the mandatory salary (social security scale), which an insured person receives. Unfortunately, employers do not pay a contribution to this insurance.

Additional contribution:The regular health insurance contribution covers only a basic primary care; everything else has to be paid privately (according to estimates by the WHO about 40%)

Ambulant supply: An ambulant supply is available in medical practices and in health care facilities.

Outpatient services: Outpatient services are available in doctor’s offices and in health care facilities.

Inpatient services: Inpatient services are only available in hospitals and policlinics.

As a foreigner you should think about the best health insurance for you before starting the journey. We also gladly assist those who are not happy with their current health insurance system.
