But the country is currently confronted with a quickly aging population, a poorly structured health system, and strong social discrepancies. Bribery is common to secure sufficient treatment in case of an illness. People living in the villages are treated badly or not at all if they become ill. Health insurance companies cover only part of the costs for treatments and medicine, so that big payments have to be made at own expense despite health insurance. In China, health insurance is not mandatory; the costs for treating minor illnesses in public hospitals are relatively low. But those who had traffic accidents (which are fairly common) or are otherwise in need of comprehensive treatment in China, have to proof large amounts of money available to cover for the costs.
